520 |a This paper gives the equivalent circuit of a linear induction motor (LIM), which is similar to that of an ordinary a.c. motor and contains four correction coefficients caused by certain unique phenomena such as end effects, and proposed a new design method of LIM. In the LIM the air gap has the entry end and exit end, and near the entry end the magnetic field is weakened due to the coming secondary sheet and near the exit end the magnetic field is intensified because of the reflection of the travelling field. This phenomenon is called the longitudinal dynamic end effects. Its analysis was first made by E.R. Laithwaite, and its true nature was revealed in the paper of S. Yamamura. They analyzied thies phenomenon under the condition of a constant current supply. The primary and the secondary of a LIM have finite widths, and generally the secondary is wider than the primary. The consequences of this physical feature of a LIM are called transverse edge effects, and its existence makes the distribution of flux not to be uniform along Z direction. The influence of the transverse edge effects was analyzied in detail in the paper of H. Bolton.
