520 |a The German galvanising industry is a typical medium-sized service sector, the members of which operate as specialists in the field of preventing steel corrosion, meeting the orders of their customers. The approximately 190 companies in this sector, with 6500 employees, protected approximately 1.5 Mt steel against corrosion in 1999 using the batch galvanising process. The total turnover of the sector is about DM 1000 million. Through its members, Industrieverband Feuerverzinken represents more than 70 per cent of the sector's capacity. The 123 member galvanising works maintain approximately 4000 m3 zinc available. Of the Association's member companies, 68 galvanising works belong to five relatively large industrial groups. Fifty five works are owned by individual companies, as are the overwhelming majority of those, which are not members of the Association. The total throughput for members of Industrieverband Feuerverzinken (job galvanising plus captive work) was 1122 Mt in 1999, and was thus slightly below the figure for the previous year. Members' job galvanising turnover fell by 4 per cent, from DM 543 million in 1998 to DM 521 million in 1999. Captive galvanising turnover rose by 7 per cent, from DM 140 million to approximately DM 150 million in the same period. Captive galvanising thus makes up approximately 22 per cent of the total tonnage for German members. The main tasks of Industrieverband Feuerverzinken and its subsidiary, Institut Feuerverzinken, are the successful development of galvanising and of the sector. The galvanising industry has a well-established position in the field of corrosion prevention, but it is necessary to defend this and build on it in order to continue to be successful in the long term. A wide range of concepts, instruments and activities exists for bringing this about. (VDEh)
