In the first part, the situation of population aging in St. Petersburg and Russia is analyzed based on traditional measures of population aging—the proportion of elderly in the total population, aging index, old-age dependency rate, and parent support ratio. In the second part, a number of prospective aging indicators that take into account remaining life expectancy will be studied. The analysis also includes a consideration of gender imbalance in the aging indicators. The acceleration of population aging in St. Petersburg and Russia leads to a new demographic situation requiring a number of economic and socially oriented measures.
